There are16 participating breweries (actually, 14 plus beerheads and our alternative beverage team, Wild Bill’s Soda). Each brewery has been paired with a World Cup national team, somewhat randomly.
We are using the Top 10 ranked national teams in the world plus the hosting South Africans and 4 other African teams…and then we filled out the field of sixteen with some other teams we give a chance to advance.
There are 32 nations in the World Cup and they are grouped 4 teams to a group, from Group A to Group H. the top two teams in each group advance to the single-elimination Round of 16. The top team from Group A plays the second place team from Group B, the B winner plays the A runnersup, C first plays D second, and so on.
Join us and our brewery partners at participating pubs to watch the 2:30 PM afternoon games throughout the group stage and check with specific breweries for events coinciding with their respective teams.
Since the Round of 16 is not known until the last day of the group stage, we cannot fill out the brackets until June 25th when we know the group results and the matchups. We will also randomly re-assign a team to any brewery(ies) whose team fails to advance to the Round of 16.
From this stage it is lose and go home. Each match will pit brewery against brewery and the winners advance while the losers can only prepare for 2014.
The four nations who reach the semifinals will be represented by their respective breweries in an actual soccer tournament on July 11th. All skill levels welcome. Six-a-side with players recruited from pubs and events - as well as some ringers we will spread across the four teams. We will have a random draft of the players we don’t know on July 5th and announce our celebrity coaches.
On Sunday July 11thy, we will meet at YSC in King of Prussia at 10 am and play ball! Replica jerseys from each country will be distributed and the round robin tournament will decide a champion.
On Sunday July 11th, the World Cup in South Africa will conclude with the championship match at 2:30 PM. We will watch it live on projection and HD screens at Kildares in King of Prussia and celebrate with all 16 of our breweries in the inaugural Copa MondiALE Fest, from 2-6PM.
