Copa MondiALE is well underway with sixteen area breweries participating in a series of fundraising events in and around Philadelphia to raise money for charity.
It's a celebration of soccer and beer and its goal is to raise money for the Starfinder Foundation, a Manayunk-based nonprofit that uses soccer as a way to motivate and educate inner-city children.
Craft breweries such as Sly Fox, Magic Hat, Iron Hill, Philadelphia Brewing Co., Great Lakes and others are participating in a friendly competition that will give area soccer fans an opportunity to try some interesting craft beers as they gather to watch the world’s most popular sport.
Each brewery will represent a country in the World Cup and that they will advance as far their country does, with the final four teams playing in a six-a-side soccer tournament on Sunday July 11. The tournament will feature area players and will be followed by the first Copa MondiALE Celebration where people can join all sixteen breweries and watch the real World Cup Final on big screens at Kildares in King of Prussia or Tavern on Broad in Center City.
“There are a lot of soccer fans that get together for these games every four years,” says organizer, Chris DePeppe, “and this year, with the games on ESPN, it is an opportunity for soccer-friendly pubs to draw in a crowd of soccer geeks. And from what I know about soccer players, they are always game for a pint.”
